“AI didn’t replace thinking—it demanded more of it”

A quote from a panel discussion I participated recently:“AI didn’t replace thinking—it demanded more of it.”

It is indeed our solemn duty, now more than ever, to ensure that the future generations get educated in thinking, whether logical, critical, or hypothetical.

I don’t believe in the “calculator hypothesis” (=you don’t need to count because we have calculators; same way you don’t need to think because we have LLMs). I don’t buy it. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’m going to do my best to make sure my students learn to think.

Interestingly, AI has in some ways made this even a clearer mission! Because academia was always, and perhaps increasingly, been plagued by empty rhetoric from scholars that actually know little about the topic they write about, but obfuscate that lack of knowledge in “pretty little sentences”.

Because that’s exactly what AI does, we can kill “two birds with one stone” when we instead teach logical thinking and informational writing.
